I work as a professional organizer and help people organize all the time, but I still found valuable information. I love the way she not only advises us what to do, but also what we might be tempted to do. Since the introduction of the smartphone, we often feel the need to clear out a few emails while waiting in line or at a stoplight.
Wait until you are wherever you need to be to act on, delete, and file away those emails. This book is the answer. Darla systematically identifies the obstacles to organization and gives practical solutions. More importantly, it gives me language to use with my husband as we work together to sift through years of accumulation. Her tone is encouraging, humorous and motivating. This particular book really addresses cleaning up the mess that's occurred in the transition from paper to digital business and record keeping.
Darla's done it again--she provides a practical booked backed with time tested and effective solutions for office organization. Darla helps come up with systems that will not only help you get organized but provide strategies to stay that way.
How many times have you gotten organized, only to find yourself in the same place some time later? Darla's book provides real world solutions that work for real people, not just hopeful ideas that seem good at first glance, but time tested solutions.
For example, she provides solutions on how to deal with every day paper that comes into the home, not only de-cluttering, but what to do to avoid being in that position in the first place. I'm so thankful to have had the chance to learn about her strategies--I just have to go and make myself follow through One person found this helpful. First the book looks at the author's SORT method to stay organized, brain science, desk strategies, maximizing productivity, and email strategies. I found the last one particularly helpful.
This book is very well researched and jam packed with great ideas! I appreciated that this author wrote with a genuine voice and sense of humor. Organizing can be frustrating, and she acknowledges that fact and makes jokes about it to lighten the mood. The content is easy to understand and presented in bite-size chunks, so you don't have to read the whole book at once. During one of the interactive exercises of this RA course we broke into small groups to share memorable aspects of one of our favorite books. Many of the people were great storytellers, which made me a bit envious. Then later many others surprised me by concentrating on why a certain book was their favorite, how it made them feel and why they remembered it almost 20 years later in some cases. After thinking about the concepts we discussed, I started to think about the books I've read over the years - why I loved them, what was memorable and why they left a lasting impression in my mind. The RA course covered quite a bit, but there were some really good takeaways. While most people enjoy a decent plot, well-developed characters and good storylines - it's how a book makes a person feel that is often the most memorable aspect of a really good book. Librarians often struggle with RA Readers' Advisory or helping people find "good books" to read. After all, we all have different opinions about what makes a book good. What I never really considered before was this - just let people tell you about their favorite books.
